One of the most amazing breakthroughs in terms of invention in the contemporary modern era along with the amazing feats in technology and the sciences is the 3D printer. Looking back in human history the invention of the printer was a point of dawn of a new age and enlightenment in human existence. Never in the history of mankind has something, a machine that replicates data from scrolls and books, freed the human mind from the oppression of illiteracy and ignorance.

Fast forward into the future we have the printer as a tool to create and replicate information and data, and then with its advancement came the 3D printer. It’s a type of printer that can create three-dimensional objects unlike the common printer. With its invention came the ability to replicate not only data but objects and it has been widely utilized since its creation. Unlike the usual printer, the 3D printer uses filaments instead of ink.

Here are some of the most notable and commonly used filaments today.

Metal Filament

These types of filaments are used to create 3D printed metal works of art or machine parts. They are commonly made up of fine or powder-like metals of various kinds to fit the need of the material which will be printed. Looking into its utility, metal filaments can be used to create parts or whole objects to fit specific needs.

Although it is most likely aesthetically higher in terms of its outcome, the metal filaments are actually much heavier compared to other filaments, which is both good and bad qualities depending on its use. One of its most notable weakness is its brittleness. Since normally it’d take time for metals to form into a shape in high temperature. Nevertheless, it is one of the most used filaments today.

Nylon Filament

Many people in the industry of 3D printing chooses nylon as a filament material for their projects. Because of its durability and certain degree of flexibility it has been widely used in the production of art materials and laboratory tools. Because of its unique characteristic as a material, it has to undergo specific factors in printing to get the optimum quality and desired outcome of any project. Also, nylon as a 3D printer filament is great in making high quality durable products because of its resistance to great impacts and its resistance on abrasion.

Polyethylene Terephthalate Filament

Also known as PETG, this material is used for its unique characteristic, its smoothness. For many people who wants to produce products that are smooth and are of high quality, they use PETG as a filament in their #D printing reproduction line.

Another good thing about the PETG is that it is mostly odour less and if it does somehow produce an odour, it is not pungent for the people around. Because of its versatility this filament has a negative side on production since it has the tendency to produce hair-thin materials that comes off as by-products and waste.

Overall, the choice of the filament that will be used will be entirely upon the decision of the costumer on whatever they see fit to use it.
