Most designer wear which are produced in central Europe is readily available in Australia for consumers. We can observe the same trend in countries such as United States,Europe, United Kingdom and certain Latin Countries and African countries. The influence over maternity wear adopted by public figures or celebrities could also have a major impact on consumers preference towards clothing. A classic example of this is when the Duke and the Duchess of Cambridge were expecting their first child, the international media's eyes were glued to the maternity wear style of the Duchess.

However most Middle Eastern and Asian countries seems to be bound by traditions and strong religious beliefs, where pregnancy and motherhood is considered as more of a sacred phase of a woman’s life. So as you can see, maternity wear can change from country to country and from culture to culture. The more traditional approach of maternity clothing would be loose pants, baggy blouses or more comfortable dresses.

When it comes to maternity clothing, it is important to know your customer. While some may be interested in designer wear, a majority will be attracted to comfort and price. Another factor to consider is, that maternity wear cannot be used for a long period of time, therefore most consumers may not be willing to spend so much on maternity clothing. Certain countries such as Russia and China have also imposed restrictions on the number of children per family. Such restrictions could also have an impact on the purchase preference of consumers in the said regions.

The birth rate of a country will have a direct influence over sales on maternity wear. In emerging markets in developing countries such as India, Philippines, Venezuela and South Africa, birth rates are approximately at over 20 births per 1000 people. Among developed regions the United States continues to remain the chief market for maternity wear.
